No-Sew T-Shirt Headband Tutorial

I’ve been seeing that a recent trend for headbands have multi-straps and knots. I love to upcycle and refashion things, so I thought I’d give it a go.

It ended up being super easy. Here is how I did it.

Take a shirt that you don’t want anymore, here I took an old pink one.

Step 1: Cut the bottom seam of the shirt off. If you’re like me and can’t cut straight the first time, then make sure you go back and make it even. I’m sure it won’t matter if your strips are a little uneven, but I like to make sure everything is as straight and even as possible.

Step 2: Cut two strips that are at least 1″ (you can make it wider if you want to). Here, I cut my strips to be 1.5″.

Step 3: Take the two strips by the loops and pull them to make them curl. They should look like the picture below once you do.

Step 4: Take one strip and cross the legs. It will look like a support ribbon. I crossed the the right leg over the left leg. I call this the ribbon-shaped strip.

Step 5: Take the other strip and place it over the first making a “U” shape. I call this the U-shaped strip.

Here is where the fun (and slight confusion) begins.

Step 6: Take the right leg of the ribbon-shaped piece and place it over the right side of the U-shaped strip.

Step 7: Take the left leg of the U-shaped strip and place it underneath the top loop of the ribbon-shaped strip, pulling it to the right.

Step 8a: Take the right leg of the U-shaped strip.

•

Step 8b: With the right leg U-shaped strip, go OVER the ribbon-shaped strip.

Step 8c: Now, take the right leg U-shaped strip and go UNDER the U-shaped strip.

• 

• 

Step 8a-8c: This is what it should look like once you have weaved the strips together.

Step 9: Pull the ends of the strips to tighten the knot. (You can make the knot as loose as you want it).

Step 10: Cut a small square from the folded edge of the t-shirt to make a rectangle piece. A 1-1.5″ square should be good.

Step 11: Match the ends of the strips and loop the rectangle piece through them.

Step 12: Take a hot glue gun and glue one side of the rectangle piece, then fold over to secure the piece.

You could stop here if you want, but I like to do one extra step.

Step 13: In the middle of the glued rectangle piece, put a dab of hot glue in the middle. Pinch the top and bottom together.

All done! Now you have your very own headband!
